Julie Workman was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Arlington, VA.  She graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and continued with graduate studies in String Pedagogy at the University of Wisconsin. She taught orchestra in the Rochester Public Schools from 1974-2010. She and her husband have three adult sons who graduated from Mayo High School.

She was elected to the Rochester School Board in 2010, was unopposed in 2014 and is running for re-election in 2018.

She is uniquely qualified for this work because of her many years of teaching in RPS, her understanding of and training in best practices in education and working with diverse groups of students.  This contributes to her ability to consider multiple perspectives, to build consensus and to approach all decision making with thoughtful deliberation.

Ms. Workman has continuously engaged in professional School Board development through the Minnesota School Board Association, National School Board Association, District workshops and others.

As an elected member of the MSBA delegate assembly, Ms. Workman collaborates with colleagues in reviewing policies for submission to the Minnesota Legislature for consideration. Her love of language, analytical skills, and thorough understanding of education and the complexities of the district are all skills she uses in district policy review and development.

Ms. Workman is one of three elected officials (school board, city, and county) who participate in “Coffee with Local Leaders,” which meets twice a month and is open to the public.

She has been involved in many numerous musical activities throughout the community and in the region.  She was a charter founder of SEMYO, performed many years with the Rochester Orchestra and continues to maintain a private violin/viola studio. She is currently the acting chair of the Perpich Center for Arts Education Board of Directors, appointed by Governor Dayton in 2016.

Her favorite hobby is geocaching and she has found caches in five countries (including five territories in Canada), fifty states, and the District of Colombia.
